Zanskar River Expedititon
Leh- Kargil-Rangdum-Remala-karsha-Pidmo-Nyerak- Lamaguru-Nimmu
(10 Nights / 11 Days)
Day 01: Arrive Leh:
We take an early morning flight to Leh. The plane flies high across the Himalayas and provides some panoramic views of the snow capped peaks. From the airport you would be transferred to a deluxe city hotel. Leh is at an altitude of 3500 mts. And everyone is advised to rest for the entire day. A successful trek in Ladakh requires you to acclimatize well.
Day 02: In Leh (Sightseeing):
This day is meant to provide an opportunity to get a feel of the place. You will be driven to the Leh Palace, which houses old relics that belong to the sixteenth century ruler of Ladakh. Later in the day a trip to the monasteries at Shey, Thiksey and Hemis will be undertaken so that you get a glimpse of the cultural life of Ladakh. Dinner and overnight in hotel.
Day 03: Leh – Kargil (3201m / 220 km / 8-9 hrs drive):
We drive from Leh to Mulbek, through a spectacular moonscape and past the colorful orchards and villages. We continue our ascent on top of the Fotu La (14,000 ft), a high mountain pass and exit the Indus valley. En-route, we do a photo stop above the Lamayuru monastery belonging to the 'Red Hat' sect. Overnight Kargil hotel.
Day 04: Kargil – Rangdum: (3657m / 130 km / 7-8 hrs drive):
After breakfast in the morning, we take on a spectacular drive past Panikar and Parkachik, with magnificent views of the Nun and Kun massifs (7000 meters),hanging glaciers and large meadows. We drive till Rangdum Gompa and stay there for the night. Overnight in tents.
Day 05: Rangdum – Remala (3635m / 95 km / 4-5 hrs drive):
From Rangdum we drive to Remala, which is the starting point for the rafting trip on the Stod river, a tributary of the Zanskar river. We drive over the Pensi La (14,500 ft), which enables grand views of the Zanskar peaks at the bottom of which is the Drung Durung glacier that feeds the Zanskar river, into which we flow on our rafts the next day. Rest of the day at leisure and taking instructions (if any) about the start for the adventure next day. Overnight in tents.
Day 06: Remala to Karsha:(3496m / 30 km river running – 3-4 hrs):
We begin our first day from Remala. We raft down the river on grade III levels and will be surrounded by 6000 meter high peaks. This day will be good introduction for first timers as well as to the river in general. We also take a break for some light lunch and beverages. We arrive at our camp in the afternoon and settle into the camp. Some of you can take an optional hike to Karsha Gompa. Overnight in tents.
Day 07: Karsha to Pidmo (3361m / 25 km river running – 2-3 hrs):
After a late morning breakfast, we raft down towards Pidmo. This stretch is approximately 25 km’s in length and has good Class III rapids. This is another easy day so that you get used to the river, the altitude and hone the paddling skills. On arrival, transfer to the camp. Rest of the day at leisure, dinner and overnight in tents.
Day 08: Pidmo to Nerak (3286m / 23 km river running - 2-3 hrs):
Revitalized after the lengthy rest yesterday, we start on an action packed day with a series of grade III rapids. The river takes on a different beauty with the walls narrowing in with towering rock scree on each side, because of which the Zanskar Gorge is often referred to as the “Grand Canyon of India”. We stop for the day to pitch camp in a small field below Nyerak village, before walking up to the village and enjoy local hospitality in Ladakhi homes. Overnight in tents.
Day 09: Nyerak to Lamaguru (3190m / 35 km river running – 5-6 hrs):
After breakfast, today’s 35 km rafting section takes us from Nyerak to Lamaguru through the core of the Zanskar A classic white water day with continuous Class III rapids, and a few Class IV rapid where the river squeezes between a gap of about 18ft. We stop for lunch near a huge waterfall and continue to camp at the confluence of Markha river with the Zanskar. Rock formations, spires and an amazing palette of colors add to the trip today. Overnight in tents.
Day 10: Lamaguru to Nimmu (3,145m / 40 km river running – 5-6 hrs) & to Leh:
Today being the last day of our great adventure, we begin on an exciting day of white water rafting on the river, covering 40 km of grade III & grade IV rapids. We raft past the village of Chilling and exciting rapids as the Zanskar plunges out of the canyon to meet with the Indus at Nimu. We end our trip at the confluence of the Zanskar with the Indus. After refreshments and biding adieus to the river guides and the boats, we drive back to Leh for a warm shower and some last minute souvenir shopping. Dinner and overnight in hotel.
Day 11: Leh to New Delhi (By air – 1½ hrs)
We will transfer to the mainland in the morning and board our jeeps for the airport.
Kashmir & Ladakh with Alpine Gangabal Lake Trek
Srinagar- Nishat Garden- Shalimar Garden-Shankcharya Temple-Sonmarg- Nichnai-Vishansar- Krishansar-Dubta pani- Gangabal Lake-Wangat- Kargil-Lamayuru-Alchi (14 Nights/15 days)
Day 1: Arrive Srinagar
You will be met by our representative at the Srinagar airport. He will assist and transfer you to the hotel/deluxe houseboat. In the afternoon you take a Shikara ride on Dal Lake, where you visit the floating vegetable gardens. While riding the Shikara’s there are plenty of opportunities for bird watching with plentiful species including Kingfisher, Little Bittern, Common Pariah Kites, Grebe etc. Dinner and Overnight in Houseboats.
Day 2: In Srinagar: Half Day Sightseeing:
Morning sightseeing of the Mughal Gardens, visiting Nishat Bagh built by Asaf Khan, the brother -in- law of Jehangir in 1632 AD, and Shalimar Bagh built by Jehangir for his wife empress Nur Jahan. All the gardens are situated on the banks of the Dal Lake with the Zabarwan hills in the background. Later drive to the hillside temple of Shankaracharya. Built in the 11th Century, the Shiva temple is built of rock stone and overlooks the Dal Lake. Afternoon will be at your leisure for individual activities. Overnight in Houseboats.
Day 3 : Srinagar-Sonamarg (2720 m):
Full day excursion about 87 kms / 3 ½ to Sonamarg (the meadow of gold). The route goes through the villages of Ganderbal, Gund and Kalan en route to Sonamarg which is the last village in the Kashmir valley on the way to Ladakh. Sonamarg lies in Sindh Valley strewn with flowers and surrounded by mountains. Sonamarg is also the base for some interesting treks to high altitude Himalayan lakes Overnight in Tents.
Day 4 : Sonamarg-Nichinai (3620 m):
Half a kilometre past the Shitkari bridge the trail leaves the bank of the Sindh and climbs up the left side of the mountain. Nichinai is at 3620 meters, 910 meters above Sonamarg and on 15 kms distance from Sonamarg. Wood and water are on hand in the camp. Overnight in Tents.
Day 5 : Nichinai- Vishansar (3680 m)- Krishansar (3819 m):
The 13 km trek starts by crossing the 4080 meters Nichinai chain then follows the river before crossing it at Hirampathri. Enroute you pass by Vishansar at 3680 meters and reach the camp at Krishansar at 3819 meters. There is a good site for camping with water available and trout fishing possibilities but the only wood is that sold by nomads at rather high prices. Overnight in hotel.
Day 6 : Krishansar-Dubta pani:
Cross the Razbal Gali at 4191 meters and follow the right bank of the river. The route descends to the Gadsar Lake at 3680 meters and crosses the river at Gadsar Maidan. There is no wood at Dubta Pani, there is possibilities to collect fuel on the final ascent to the camp at 3280 meters. Overnight in hotel.
Day 7 : Dubta Pani-Gangabal Lake (3570 m):
The day's 17 km trek starts with an ascent to the Satsaran Gali pass at 3680 meters, it's only open from June to October. You have a fine view of the Satsar Lake at 3600 meters. The climb then follows to the 4081 metres Zajibal Gali pass, also open only from June to October. From here there is fine view of the Nund Kol Lake (3501 m). The camp site at Gangabal Lake (3570 m) has wood, water and trout fishing. The Lake, at the foot of Harmukh, is the site for a major pilgrimage each August. Overnight in hotel.
Day 8 : Gangabal Lake:
Enjoy the day with trout fishing . Visiting the Nomads with their floks of sheep & goats. Overnight in hotel.
Day 9 : Gangabal Lake-Wangat (2050 m):
The 19 km trek descends 1500 metres to wangat at 2050 meters. About five kilometres from Wangat there are the interesting ruins of two old temples. Overnight in hotel.
Day 10 : Wangat-Kargil:
Drive Kargil about 07 hrs. Kargil (2650 m), is the headquarters of district Kargil. It was a transit for caravans on their way to and from China, Tibet Yarken and Kashmir till 1949, today it is a major stop over for the travellers to Srinager and Zanskar. Overnight in hotel.
Day 11 : Kargil-Lamayuru-Alchi:
Drive Alchi about 160 km, overcrossing Namikala ( 3718 m) and Fotula (4094 m) . Enroute visit the huge rock cut statue of Lord Buddha at Mulbek, also visit Lamayuru monastery-known to be the oldest monestic establishment in Ladakh. Arrive Alchi and transfer to hotel. Overnight in hotel.
Day 12: Alchi-Leh:
Morning visit Alchi Choskor (Religious Enclave)- famous for its architecture, woods carvings and frescoes. Evening stroll around the charming village of Alchi . Later drive to Leh (69 km/ 2 hrs.), en route visit Likir gompa & Museum.. Arrive Leh and transfer to hotel. Overnight in hotel.
Day 13: Leh:
Morning visit Stok Palace Museum and Tibetan refugge camp back to the Hotel for lunch. Late afternoon visit Leh Palace, Shankar Gompa and Shanti Stupa. Return to hotel via main bazaar. Overnight in hotel.
Day 14: Leh:
Explore Indus Valley, After breakfast proceed for a day excursion with packed lunch to visit Shey Palace, Thikse and Hemis monastery. Later drive back to Leh. Overnight in hotel.
Day 15: Leh Depature:
Morning transfer to domestic airport for flight to Delhi.
